Academic Skills for Thesis Writers: Coherent thesis and time management

This series of 50 minute seminars is aimed at students who are writing a Master's or PhD thesis. These sessions together comprise a single course; however, students can attend only those sessions they will find useful.

Wednesday 15/2

2pm: Thesis structure and planning

3pm: Critical reading and note-taking*  

Thursday 16/2

2pm: Writing a coherent thesis

3pm: Time management

*Note: The workshops on proposals and on critical reading and note-taking are split into two groups: one for qualitative research and the other for quantitative research.

By the end of the sessions, students should be able to:

• Understand the overall purpose and structure of the proposal
• understand library resources available to them and structure a literature review as part of a thesis
• plan for and structure a thesis
• know how to read critically and take notes efficiently and effectively
• deploy key strategies for creating thesis coherence
• create a realistic work schedule and meet key deadlines
